Fitting the
Bill with IMS

Turner
examines how as more and more network operators around the
world adopt the IMS architecture, how they can fulfill their
increasingly complex billing functions.
Fergus
O'Reilly, VP of Product Strategy with Highdeal, explains:
“ OSS and BSS were custom projects for decades, which made
them hard to integrate. With one large customer, we stopped
counting after identifying 211 billing engines. It's just
not sustainable to carry on like this.
Some
90 per cent of what operators do is common to them all – fixed
and mobile. So spending millions on customisation makes no
sense. The TeleManagement Forum is doing good work, enabling
vendors to build off-the-shelf software, which in effect means
shared R&D costs. Then they can just customise the last
10 to 20 per cent to differentiate themselves.”
