Advances in Technology and Changes in Capacity Demand Mean that Satellite Services are Once More Set to Grow

...A major backer of hybridised part-satellite, part-terrestrial model is US-based Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV), with which Inmarsat has recently signed a spectrum allocation agreement. MSV has recently announced an all-IP 4G satellite and terrestrial communications network covering the US and Canada.
“You’re not talking typical consumer applications,” says Fergus O’Reilly, CTO of Highdeal, which supplied MSV with a pricing and rating solution for its new network. “Think of oil rigs, where satellite is really the only choice. Or the people helping after the Hurricane Katrina disaster where terrestrial networks were working in combination with satellite.”
